Video begins with burnt orange drawn background with orange squiggly lines around the frame. Christine walks into frame but the burnt orange background blocks her. She adjusts her belt while waiting for us to finish reading the title. Title in bold and caps in orange “[CLOSER CAPTIONS]” with text underneath “By CHRISTINE SUN KIM / Music by MINNA CHOI”. Orange background, squiggly lines, and text all fade away as Christine begins. Christine is wearing a dark pink velour top, light blue jeans, her blue hair is tied back, she is standing against a white background. 

CHRISTINE: I think a lot about closed captions. Those little lines of text below me right now. [Christine points towards the open captions on the bottom of video.] As a non-hearing person, I rely on them. And here’s a not-so-well-kept secret about closed captions: They suck. Captioning dialogue is one thing. But captioning sound is another. For example, if music starts to play. The captions might go something like: [Christine stands still, watching the camera, as burned on captions appear.]

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [music]

CHRISTINE: One. Word. If I’m lucky, maybe I’ll get: 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [violin music]

CHRISTINE: Which is… better, but still not enough. It doesn’t tell me anything about what that sound is made of. How it moves. Its personality. The more description, the better. So for instance: 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [mournful violin music]

CHRISTINE: Or: 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [mournful violin music that sounds like crying alone in an empty bar]

CHRISTINE: Or better yet: 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [mournful violin music that sounds like crying alone in an empty bar, in 1920s Paris, you’re wearing a very tiny but fashionable hat, that you tip to the bartender as you order a fourth martini, music stops]

CHRISTINE: That tells me something. I place a lot of trust in the people who write captions. But those people have a different relationship with sound and the world than I do. So I started to wonder… What would it look like if I wrote the captions myself? 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [the sound of anticipation intensifies]

CHRISTINE: Let me show you.

Video fades to black. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [day begins like the first line of a poem, the sound of sun entering the bedroom]

Video fades to a partly-cloudy sky with the top of trees moving with the wind.

Cut to an open window from inside a bedroom, the view shows the same partly cloudy skies and trees in the background. Inside the bedroom are white walls with soft white window shades.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [the sound of eyelids opening, electricity attempting to find its output]

Cut to a corner of a bed wrapped in white sheets, with white duvet on top, next to a white wall. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [phone wakes up too]

Video slowly pans from right to left over the white duvet.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [explosion of headlines, sudden silence as finger breaks away from screen]

Cut to inside a shower with running water, streaming down the white tiles. Video slowly pans down.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [feet slapping onto bathroom tiles, water in rhythmic drops, drops get bigger, louder]

Cut to bottom of the bathroom floor, just outside the shower, small soft brown tiles complete the floor with tan tiles on the side. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [the sound of shampoo scent floating among the fog, towel crinkles, the sound of skin waking up]

Cut to a bright blue mug with dark blue speckles all over, on a light wooden table. The mug is filled with a dark brown liquid. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [clicks of a stirring spoon]

Cut to the same mug and table with a jar of sugar, spoon, and disposed teabag just next to the mug. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [second wind]

Cut to different people’s feet in frame, walking in and out of a yellow metro-car. People are cropped from their waist to above, only showing legs and feet.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [heavy traffic of footfall]

Cut to wide shot of inside a train station that has a curved ceiling with windows. A train is in the background with no trains in the foreground.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [the scent of a dry cotton mouth]

Cut to grey and white tiles of the train station. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [morning commute greets and whines]

A person walks through the frame while holding a black shoulder-bag. A reflection of a moving train appears on the tiles.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [the sound of strong exhaustion]

Cut to orange capped blue waves, very choppy waves. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [sweetness of orange sunlight]

Cut to a wider view of the same orange capped blue waves, with sun’s reflection on the water.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [glitter flirting with my eyeballs, the sound of turning something over inside your head]

Cut to a more wider view of the same orange capped blue waves, with the sun’s reflection on the water.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [over and over, in and out]

Cut to a sunset sky with pink and orange clouds at the horizon. People stand in groups in an alley way. Brick buildings left and right. Green shrubs and green vines coat the brick building on the right. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [I sometimes see busy scenes in movies, captioned with only one musical note]

Same scene continues with some people standing and chatting as others walk through.

Cut to inside a bedroom with sunset beaming through the window panes creating shadows on a wall. There is an old brown radio on the left. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [I think of silence as a note played quietly as possible]

Cut to just outside the windows, with dusk in background. A half-moon excites the scene. Silhouetted trees and buildings create the frame’s skyline. 

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [key turns twice to lock, the sound of socks peeling off feet]

Cut to inside a dark hallway with a door slightly ajar, letting the room’s light splash the hallway’s floor

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [whispered conversation, words throwing punches, the sound of hurt feelings scabbing over]

Cut to nightlights reflecting on the evening water.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [the sound of temperature slowly dropping, the sound of stars having a conversation with each other, air becomes stiff, long and stretched sigh, the sound of pillow holding head]

Evening water slowly fades to black just before the last caption stays on.

BURNED-ON CAPTIONS: [day ends like the last line of a poem]

Eventually the ♪ decreases at a millisecond before disappearing altogether.
