Does tai chi enhance quality of life in clients with fibromyalgia? The practice of Yang-style tai chi for one hour two times weekly for 12 to 24 weeks is moderately reliable in enhancing quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia. (Strength of Recommendation [SOR]: B, based upon a small meta-analysis and randomized regulated trial [RCT]) No substantial unfavorable results have been reported in patients with fibromyalgia who perform tai chi.
A 2013 systematic evaluation examined complementary treatments for fibromyalgia. In a subgroup of five trials (n = 242), the mean pre- and postintervention Fibromyalgia Impact Survey (FIQ) scores were compared in patients who practiced Yang-style tai chi (the most popular of the 5 types). Outcomes from all 5 studies favored tai chi.
