  1. Ask about miscellaneous odds and ends. This may seem like a minor issue but there are many questions you may have that may play a direct part in the lawyer's decision on whether or not to take your case or whether or not the case is appropriate for the lawyer to take. If there are any questions you need to ask the lawyer, you'll get a straight answer before you get involved in financial agreements with him/her.
  2.
  3. Before going to meet lawyers around me , can you get information about lawsuits and his experience from any written materials like a brochure or his law firm website? Look to see what information they provide. Is the lawyer hesitant to talk to you on the phone? Are there any pamphlets or booklets the lawyer has written that he sends to prospective clients to give them information about their type of case?

  7. If your spouse has filed for divorce, you should immediately consult an attorney. Do not trust your spouse if he/she tells you that you do not need an attorney or that his/her attorney will take care of everything. An attorney in a divorce cannot represent both sides.

  9. Are there no other options? Filing for bankruptcy is never an easy way out. Are you sure you have explored all possible options? Look into debt restructuring, loan modifications, mortgage adjustments, refinancing options, and all forms of debt negotiation before turning to bankruptcy. While bankruptcy won't leave you homeless and penniless, it's definitely not a good way to get rid of debt.
  10.
  11. If you are earning enough to cover your bills, don't file for bankruptcy. Filing for bankruptcy can really damage your credit in the long run, by staying on your report for up to ten years.
  12.
  13. Make sure your bills are always paid by their due date and don't simply pay the minimum amount if you want to keep trump bankruptcy at bay. Normally, most people only pay the minimums in an effort to stay comfortable. The downside is that this is a faster track to deeper debt.
  14.
  15. Know what you're getting into. You may think it's possible to file for personal bankruptcy on your own if you cannot afford to hire a lawyer. If you do, remember to educate yourself on things that you should know. Those who do their own bankruptcies often make mistakes that interfere with their ability to secure a discharge. Double- and triple-check your filings so this doesn't happen to you.
