1.
April 19, 2007 After speaking at Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference last week on Linking Strategies, I decided to expand on one of the topics I briefly covered in my last column. The subject was how to generate content, gain backlinks and establish your company as an authority with an industry blog. A word of caution: starting a blog is technically simple, but is by no means a quick and easy method to attract backlinks. Maintaining a quality blog can be time intensive. Yet there are numerous benefits besides gaining backlinks for those focused on long-term results. Some of the benefits of creating a blog focused on your industry:

 2.
Gain Expert/Authority Status

 3.
Covering news, research, and/or trends for your industry will help establish your blog as the place people will turn to for news. With expert or authority status your chances of getting referrals, media citations and interviews are vastly increased. If you work in a large industry or one that is news saturated choose a specific niche to focus on. This will help you to get noticed more quickly as an expert.

 4.
Gain Back backlinks

 5.
Links can be gained from the stories written in popular media by being citied as a reliable source, a quote from your commentary, or you might be contacted for further comments. If you are quoted, it can lead to other sites re-quoting and linking to your site. This can be an invaluable source of secondary backlinks referencing your site.

 6.
 7.
In addition, there are numerous places that list blogs ranging from industry resources to blog relevant niche related business. These are great sites to help build awareness of your blog and provide some trusted link juice.

 8.
Fresh Content

 9.
All this new content can lead to many more pages that can rank for various search terms. This can lead to increased traffic! This is a good way to target additional long-tail search phrases. It also keeps your site looking fresh to search engines.

 10.
Internal Linking Opportunities

 11.
These new pages provide more internal linking opportunities. Take full advantage of this and link from within the content to those important subpages. Remember backlinks from within content tend to count for more. Plus it provides additional opportunities for keyword variations in the anchor text.

 12.
New Traffic Sources (Blog Search Engines)

 13.
Blogs can create an additional source of traffic for your site from blog search engines. Do a simple search for “blog search engine” to find them.

 14.
Here are just two well-known examples:

 15.
• Google Blog Search

 17.
• Technorati

 18.
Now that we have explored some of the benefits of blogs, in addition to attracting backlinks, you are probably thinking it could be time consuming to find the news for your industry. Perhaps it is a small industry with few changes, or so large and fast changing it would take hours each day to keep up. There are several methods to overcome such obstacles and find stories to write about in an efficient quick manner. Two of these methods are RSS feeds and alert services.
