  1. Teen dating abuse is a harrowing reality, with far-reaching consequences that should never be ignored or downplayed. The upheaval and trauma of this experience can echo through a lifetime, and its psychological and physical impacts often go unnoticed or unacknowledged. Unfortunately, one in three teenagers – both male and female – experience teen dating abuse, cementing the fact that such issues need to be urgently addressed on a national level.
  2.
  3. A silent disaster, teen dating abuse is an epidemic that is growing each day. Many teens experiencing abuse hesitate to report it or seek help, due to fear of victimization, cultural or religious beliefs, or because they hope to salvage the relationship. If unchecked, the impact of dating abuse only compounds — those who experience such abuse are more likely to enter into other destructive relationships, become depressed and make other unhealthy life choices.
  4.
  5. Divulging such stories of hardship is difficult, but necessary for meaningful change. Through courageous tales of struggle, we can spread awareness of the issue, empower survivors, and identify resources to aid those needing help. From a public health perspective, it is also important to understand its root causes, prevalence and effect on populations. With this knowledge, we can better identify and address teen dating abuse on a national level.
  6.
  7. Shining a spotlight on such issues is essential. But this only scratches the surface. dating websites must bring our focus back to action — teaching youth to recognise abuse and intervene when necessary, to empower survivors and provide ample resources for their well-being. We must teach our children that love doesn't hurt, that no one should use their words or hands to intimidate or harm a partner. We must help young people see and believe that they don't deserve to be dulled and demeaned, that their lives should be valued, and that nothing, not even a relationship, is worth risking their safety or happiness.
  8.
  9. If we are to curb the steady escalation of teen dating abuse, we must also get tough with perpetrators. Real-world consequences must be put in motion. This not only deters further abuse, but let's survivors know that their right to safety will be vigorously defended.
  10.
  11. Crucially, public health policies need to apply a gender-responsive lens to existing strategies. Such an approach requires us to critically examine the ways in which physical and verbal violence are gendered and the barriers particular genders of survivors may face when seeking safety or healing.
  12.
  13. We must invest in better training for those responding to teen dating abuse, so that survivors can access meaningful support and their needs are properly prioritised. We must invest in training for youth leaders, teachers, advocates and community members on how to recognise dating abuse and refer victims to support. We also need to explore and develop wide-ranging prevention tactics to challenge power imbalances and the relationships between perpetrator and victim.
  14.
  15. Additionally, we should implement a range of prevention programming to engage and empower young people. We must arm young people with powerful messages of self-worth and respect, and tools to prevent violence before it happens. We must teach young people the importance of communication and understanding in a healthy relationship, while helping them recognise when their relationships become unhealthy.
  16.
  17. Finally, it is our collective duty to convey the utter unacceptability of dating abuse on a national level, and the need to take meaningful action. Through face-to-face and digital peer education and awareness campaigns, we can create a wave of change that encourages more teenagers to speak out, seek help and support when needed, and ultimately strive to create safer, more inclusive relationships for their peers.
