The player places a bet and the video poker machine deals five cards from a standard 52-card pack. The player then has one possibility to hold or discard any variety of unwanted cards, and is dealt an equal number of replacement cards from the deck.

Soon after the substitute cards are dealt the winnings are calculated based on the five-card poker hand. The payout depends on the specific variety of game begin played.
